Our Impact

The Impact of Data Science

Data science includes data collection, organization, analysis, and visualization, all of which can be used by large and small communities alike for the public good. Data informs decision-making related to agriculture, education, economic development, health and wellness, and more.

The Data Science for the Public Good Young Scholars Program provides an opportunity for students interested in research to be a part of a solution-focused team using data to inform real public policy decisions. During the course of a summer, students will learn methods of programming, statistical analysis, and data tools. These skills will be applied to real-world problems in communities across Iowa in a collaboration providing research experience to future scholars and solutions needed by communities.

After working as a Data Science Intern at DSPG, I learned that data science is also about understanding people and communities. The program made me see that data can be a powerful tool to help solve social problems and make things fairer for everyone.

Case Studies

When DSPG launched in 2020, the team partnered with other land grant universities in the United States to conduct case studies proving the impact of data science on decision-making.

The DSPG experience helped me realize that I wanted to work in the public sector. I now work as a data scientist at the U.S. Geological Survey Water Mission Area.
