DSPG Student Application

Program Details — Young Scholars Program, Summer 2025

The 2025 summer program will be a 40 hour per week paid program where undergraduate and graduate students collaborate in-person on Iowa State University's campus. The program covers a 10 week period starting from May 15th to July 26th. Project participants must currently be enrolled at Iowa State University by the time of their application and expected to find their own housing accommodation in Ames during the program. Program hours for a typical day start at 8:00am and end at 4:00pm.

An itinerary of a typical day in the 2024 DSPG program was the following.

8:00 - 8:30 Morning Presentations & Data Activities
8:30 - 10:00 Meeting with Project Leads to Discuss Weekly Objectives
10:00 - 12:00 Project Work Time
12:00 - 1:00 Lunch Time with Occasional Talks by Data Science Professional
1:00 - 4:00 Project Work Time

How to Apply — Young Scholars Program, Summer 2025

Undergraduate students from any discipline with quantitative/analytical skills that have an interest in learning data science are encouraged to apply. Students must be enrolled at Iowa State University to be eligible.

Applications are currently rolling until February 29th. Selected participants will be interviewed and notified by late March.

Applications for undergraduate studies can be completed through the following form. Successful undergraduate candidates have previously demonstrated the following abilities.

  • Ability to cooperate as team members.
  • Ability to think critically about social and technical issues.
  • Some technical experience in coding or GIS work.
  • Being timely and professional with their work.

Graduate students are encouraged to apply as Graduate Fellows through the same application link. Graduate fellows must be enrolled at Iowa State University.

Successful Graduate Fellows in the past demonstrated the following abilities.

  • Strong skills in team and project management.
  • Technical proficiency in coding or GIS to support undergraduates.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Adaptability to project management.
  • Being timely and professional with their work.
